" LINEARITY "
a show of Art and Fashion
Art and fashion have had a linear
linkage , which has been there through the ages . More recently there have been fashion
shows in art galleries like the Vivien Westwood collection at the V & A, London . The
flapper styles at the Museum in San Francisco . Nan kemper's style at the Met , NY .Our
own Yusuf Arrakal working with fashion designers . The Stylefile show which brings artists
and designers together . And then fashion designers who have art galleries . It all melds
together harmoniously . It is therefore natural when an artist and a fashion designer are
a married couple , that their work should synergise and reflect off each other . Vijay
Belgave is an artist from Latur , now settled in Bombay . When I first saw his work ,
there was great talent ,but a darkness to them. Coming from the earthquake hit Latur , it
was hardly surprising . But over the years, in a more conducive Bombay environment , his
works have brightened and improved tremendously , and he is now well considered by the
discerning collectors who have his work. For the show LINEARITY , Vijay continues with the
busts of women , but highlights the features with sharp lines . Like a spotlight
brightening parts of the face , and keeping the rest in almost a haze . The effect is very
dramatic , contrasting with the softness and serenity of the expressions on the face.
Light and shadow , contemplation and joy , life and thought . A complete colour range from
pastels to earth tones to bold bright hues . Taking her cue from these lines , Poonam S
launches her label POONVIJ . Sharply tailored clothes . Strong lines slashing across the
fabric , defining the cut . Poonam has used native fabric from Belgav , from where Vijay's
ancestors come . Pure cottons in earth colours and bold borders providing the hint of gold
. Poonam studied at the Raheja College of Art and graduated with the best designer award .
You have heard and read of art and fashion . Now come see it for yourself . LINEARITY
shows you how well it works .
